Space Blob Advance
A downloadable game for Windows
This game is about a character who breaks through levels of the Earth to gain access to the Underworld. When the character reaches the Underworld a main ‘Boss’ is waiting to fight the character.
To get through each level of Earth, the character starts as a small blob and gains mass. Once enough mass is gained the character develops the ability to activate a pressure plate to open a door or break through the ground to the next level as it moves towards the Underworld. As the character gains mass and moves through levels it will become harder and more skills in parkour and puzzle solving will be needed. Some of the more detailed levels will have multiple pressure plates or puzzles requiring the blob to split.
After participating in the Australian STEM videogame challenge in 2019 and placing 2nd in Australia, Year 10 students Zach Whittle, Henry Robinson and Nick Turner took on the challenge again in 2021. This year's theme was "scale", and they went one place better than 2019, scoring 467 out of a possible 500 points and placing first out of over 3000 entries from across Australia in the Years 9-12 Open Category.
Putting in approximately 400 hours programming their game "Space Blob Advance" in GameMaker, and 165 days of work overall, the boys produced 329 sprites, 5 custom written and performed soundtracks, and 35 pages of documentation
Zach, Henry, and Nick will be congratulated for their work with their game being presented at PAX, Australia’s biggest gaming convention. Attendees of the conference can play their game, interview the team, and pick up a copy of Space Blob Advance to take home with them. PAX will also run an ad for the game on the PAX Twitch stream to over 100,000 followers.
